By decarbonylation by means of hydrogen, monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are obtained from fused polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons having at least one enone bond and/or enol bond in the rings or of dibasic acids derived from these or mixtures of the two. The starting compounds can be obtained, for example, by oxidation of the corresponding hydrocarbons. The process, which in principle represents a hydrogenation in the absence of catalysts otherwise usual, is especially suitable for the reprocessing of residual oils from crude oil refining, of asphalt-type products, coal tar and similar products.
