1432876 Ventilation and dust suppression in mining machines COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd 14 June 1974 [11 July 1973] 33043/73 Heading E1F Dust laden air is extracted from the vicinity of a rotary cutter 2 of a mining machine by a water spray from nozzles 26 mounted in passages 15 of a loading cowl, the water spray also serving to remove the dust from the extracted air. Flexible elements 17, (18) and 19 provide seals between the upper, side and lower boundaries formed by the cutter 2 and the loading cowl, and deflector plates 27 guide the cleaned air to outlets 28. When the cutter reaches the end of a traverse the loading cowl, which is pivotally mounted on the cutter support housing, is repositioned on the opposite side of the cutter and nozzles 26 mounted in passages 16 actuated. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 3 air flow inlet 59 is closed by a spring biassed door 61. The door is opened by a ram 63 which is supplied with water from a feed pipe 66, the latter also feeding nozzles 76. This ensures that when an air flow inducing spray is directed along passage 55, the ram 63 is actuated to open the door 61. Wire mesh screens 83, 84 and guide screens 86, 87 are provided to separate the water from the air.
