Irregularly shaped sheets of material stacked one on top of the other, such as animal skins or thin flexible plates, are lifted automatically, one at a time in a sequence of operations as follows: (1) at a selected point on the surface of the top skin, a suction head connected to a vacuum is applied; (2) the suction head lifts the skin, which is then transferred to an unloading point; (3) the vacuum connection is closed and the skin is dropped; (4) the suction head returns to starting point. Before being picked up, the top skin is moved relatively to the next below, either lengthways in one direction horizontally so as to loosen it and allow air to penetrate between it and the next skin, or possibly in two opposing directions to create a bulge, ensuring that air breaks the adhesion between them. A smooth unbroken sequence of operations is assured, a single skin only being picked up every five time without fail.
