Iron sponge melting induction furnace - with molten bath circulation directed downward in centre for higher slag temperatures

Metal charges such as iron sponge are molten in an induction crucible furnaces which is surrounded by an induction coil of such design that near the crucible wall the direction of flow of the molten bath is upwards, and in the centre of the crucible downwards. A parting cylinder near the top end, made of refractory ceramics, separates the two zones of motion; the fresh charge is added in the outer annulus so that it meets the ascending flow. This conveys the solid iron sponge particles in the centre to the bottom; the formed slag must rise against the descending molten bath flow and is therefore heated to produce a hot slag cover in the centre. It can then be continuously discharged.
