Lubricating oils of very high viscosity index (VI) are produced by (a) hydrocracking a high b.p. mineral oil fraction with a catalyst contg. Ni and/or Co, Mo and/or W, and P on a refractory support (pref. 3-18 wt.% Ni, 6-24 wt.% Mo, 1-10 wt.% P and 1-6 wt.% F on an Al2O3 support contg. 0.1-3 wt.% SiO2 and =0.01 wt.% Na, pref. pre-sulphurized), at elevated temp. and pressure, pref. 350-450 degrees C/100-200 bars; (b) separating the hydrocarbons of b.p. 350-400 degrees C from the liquid product; (c) separating the residue of b.p.350-400 degrees C, by deparaffination, pref. with a mixt. of 40-60 vols. MEK and 60-40 vols. toluene at -10 to -40 degrees C, into a high VI (e.g. 100-140) lubricating oil and a non-deoiled paraffin; (d) catalytically isomerizing the paraffin in the presence of a H2-contg. gas, pref. at 310-450 degrees C/50-200 bars, pref. using the same catalyst as in (a), pref. in the same reactor, and (e) obtaining a very high VI (e.g. 140-170) lubricating oil by deparaffination of the hydroisomerizate, pref. as in (c).
