Grain leather, suede, cleavage leather, from cowhide, ox, pig, sheep, goat or deerskin, for use in clothing, hand-bags and gloves, is seasoned by coating from a soln. contg. esp. 1-15 wt.% of (A) a poly-gamma-alkyl-glutamate of formula -NH-CH(CH2CH2COOR)-CO- m (I) (where R is 1-6C alkyl and m is 200-3000), or (B) a copolymer of a poly-gamma-alkyl-glutamate, esp. 30-95 wt.% of a poly-gamma-alkylglutamate of formula: -HH-CH(CH2CH2COOR)-CO- n (II) (where n is 40-2000) and 5-70 wt.% of a polyurethane, or (C) a mixt. of 60-95 wt. pts. of =1 component (A) and (B) and 5-40 wt. pts. of a high mol. wt. polymer cpd. compatible with (A) and/or (B), esp. a urethane, epoxy, or alkyd resin or a protein or nitrocellulose having 1000-200000 mol.wt., in a solvent; followed by heating the coated surface, e.g. at room temp. to 150 degrees C.
