Sepn. and recovery of a metal component (I) and an aromatic polycarboxylic acid component (II) from a compsn. prepd. by contacting a cpd. forming (II) contg. 2 adjacent COOH gps. and either Mn or Co, with a basic salt chosen from alkali metal and ammonium (bi)carbonates, in aq. medium, in which either (I) an aq. soln. or dispersion of cpd. contg. not 120 g. moles H2O per g. atom metal, and (ii) an aromatic polycarboxylic acid/metal cpd., is contacted with either (iii) an aq. soln. or dispersion of a basic salt contg. not 12 g. moles H2O per g. ion alkali metal or ammonium in basic salt, or (iv) the basic salt, or a combination of (i) with (iv), or of (ii) with (iii), to separate (I) as the solid (basic)carbonate, and (II) as the aq. soln. of its alkali metal or ammonium salt. The metal cpd. is recovered by e.g. filtration of its crystals which are of increased size thus facilitating easy sepn. Prod. used in e.g. org. oxidn. process as catalyst, e.g. in tere- or isophthalic acid prepn.
