1479893 Moulding foamed articles having an outer covering layer SAAB-SCANIA AB 13 June 1974 [18 June 1973] 26287/74 Heading B5A In a method of moulding an article by placing a covering sheet in a mould and filling the mould with a foamable plastics material which expands to fill the covering sheet and form a cellular core, the sheet is coated on the side facing the foamable material with a substance which causes acceleration or retardation in the rate of the reaction forming the cellular plastics; this results in the formation of a temporary layer of reduced adhesion in the plastics material whereby the plastics material is able to expand freely in the mould during foaming. In the examples, the foam is polyurethane and the outer covering is PVC treated with (a) a polyurethane varnish containing excess polyol component, (b) an isocyanate or (c) a tertiary amine. Another suggested combination is an epoxy resin forming the cellular core and a covering layer of a thermoplastic/textile laminate treated with a tertiary amine. It is also stated that the outer covering may be a metal or a textile material. A heat softened covering sheet may be plastically deformed by the expansion of the foam.
