The speed regulated drive has its losses, due to slip, reduces by using an induction motor whose stator windings are coupled to the a.c. supply and produce a magnetic field of the same frequency as that of the supply. This field interacts with an asymmetric rotor having different longitudinal and transverse reactances. Interaction with the stator impedance, the a.c. network impedance and other impedances inbetween produces a torque which can be controlled by altering the energy flow according to the required speed/torque characteristics. The rotor is made from a laminated core with pole gaps either as a single pole with no winding, or with a winding and a two-pole short circuit.
