An interpolating arrangement for numerically controlled machine tools minimises the amount of X-Y co-ordinate input data to the system. The interpolator unit is located between the computer output and the digital servo drive system. The interpolator design is based upon shift registers and an adder/subtractor unit and delivers stepping signals for the X and Y axes. Linear and circular interpolation routines provide for controlled movement between two sets of co-ordinate data. In operation the interpolator ensures that while one segment of a particular path is proceeding, the projected motion for the next successive segment is being computer from stored information. An example of the computer programme is included.
