Combined shot-blasting of castings and sand-reclaiming - eliminates shake-out, and blasting removes chemical binders from sand grains

Instead of the normal practice of knocking or shaking castings out of the moulding boxes, the complete box with sand and castings goes straight to the fettling area, i.e. to the shot-blasting unit. The boxes are fed through the shot-blaster at 0-75 degrees from the horizontal so the castings do not fall out of the boxes, and a grating can be provided under the box for the same reason. By this means, all the sand is removed from the castings at one place instead of being knocked-out or falling out at several locations. The shot-blaster can handle the dust and is very suitable for reclaiming sands, esp. chemically-bonded sands, where blasting removes the binder from the grains so the sand is ready for re-use. Dust, cost and noise are reduced by this method.
