The heat-transfer tube, containing a predetermined volume of vaporising fluid, has a cladding of wire mesh or similar wick material inside the insulating sheath, and extends between two heat-transfer zones. Additional wick material is fitted ion one zone inside the sheath and adjoining the main wick cladding. When this zone is heated and the other zone connected to a cooling shaped section, a greater heat transfer coefficient is achieved, than when the sequence is reversed. The sheath is pref. an elongated tube, and the fluid volume the same as the interior space of the cladding material. Sheath and wick material cladding may be of stainless steel. With reverse direction heating the entire fluid can be absorbed in the first zone with little tendency to flow back to the second.
