A homogeneous liquid mixture in determined proportions is obtained under a sterile atmosphere in a culture chamber by an automatic process comprising a number of measuring vessels and solenoid valves. The quantity of liquid passing from the measuring vessels into the culture chamber is controlled by adjusting height of the outlet tube in the measuring vessel. Initiation of the automatic process for emptying and filling the culture chamber is when the preset limit of optical density of the mixture in the chamber, as read by an instrument for measuring optical density, is reached. A pilot system from the instrument begins the automatic sequence. The chamber is used in laboratories requiring big volumes of synchronous or non-synchronous cultures and in industry for sterile mixing of two sterile liquids. Automatic activation of discharge and fill sequence by optical density instrument avoids manual start based on visual estimation.
