Dyes of formula X-Ar-N=N-Ar-Y (in which Ar is an aryl gp. with 1-3 benzene rings, Y is hydrogen as X, lower alkyl, alkoxy, aralkyl or dialkylamino wit 1-6C alkyl gps X is a gp. of formula: R is 1-18C alkyl, cycloalkyl with 5-6C rings aryl with 1-2 benzene rings or aralkyl with 1-2C alkyl and R1 is hydrogen or as R) are used in anionic polymerise. of lactams to form chemically-bound dyes and to catalyse the reaction to give polyamides. Stronger catalytic activity and better heat resistance are obtd than with known dyes, e.g. of Hansa yellow type. Attachment to the polymer is almost 100% and coloured oligomers can be made for use as non-extractable dyes. Easily prepd by reaction of diketenes with aminoazo cpds.
