The exposure meter terminates each exposure when a given radiation dose for optimum film contrast is reached. The radiation dose controller reduces the X-ray tube voltage when the exposure time falls below a certain limit, and increases it when the exposure time exceeds an upper limit. A manually operated switch preselects the exposure time and disconnects the automatic exposure meter. This connects the radiation dose controller as the exposure meter, so that a nominal signal is applied to it, producing an optimum film blackening. The shortest exposure time is programmed, and can be manually selected by the switch. The automatic exposure meter may be reconnected when the adjusted tube voltage does not provide sufficient film contrast.
