A gas or oil fired central heating boiler has a pedestal type base (8) with air entry openings, and supporting a domed cylindrical combustion chamber (1), a bottom entry for the burner, and a central top outlet (5), with the heating coil inlet at that point. The coil is wound around the combustion chamber and terminates at a point (6) near the top of the pedestal, and is housed inside an outer jacket (7) containing water, which circulates in counterflow to the hot gases through the coil and is drawn off through an outlet (10) at the top. A circular plate (3) separates the pedestal and the water cylinder (7).
