The pump forms part of an extra-thoracic circuit responsible for 70% of the blood circulating. The heart control nerves are unaffected, with edemas disappearing progressively, the tissues disorganised by them reverting slowly to their original state. The system is protected from any electrical or mechanical breakdown, since during repairs all the blood can be diverted to the left auricle by merely rotating the inlet tap. The pump has a metal body with a piston rotating under the control of an electromagnetic motor driven by sets of batteries producing 12 or 24V. The shaft has a helically wound metal strip with five turns to move the oxygenated blood.
