Flame proofing plastics materials with water - added as free or bound water, during or after processing

A process for flameproofing plastic matls. comprises mixing the latter with an aq. prod. so that the plastic contains 5-95 wt% water, based on plastic. The water may be free or bound to a solid matl. and or distributed in the plastic matl. before, during or after conversion to the (semi)finished prod. The flameproofed plastics are also claimed. The aqs. prod. may be an aqs. soln. contg. 5% water, e.g. sea water; a solid impregnated with an aqs. soln.; and aqs. soln. absorbed on e.g. molecular sieves, Al2O3, silica gel, diatomaceous earth, active carbon etc. hydrates and polyhydrates of e.g. Na2CO3, KCl, CaSO4, alums of K, NH4, Cr, silico-aluminates, bauxite etc. The process obviates the use of conventional additives which give use to problems of toxicity.
