Appts. for separating heavy solid particles from light solid particles using a heavy liquid as separation medium comprises:- (1) a container, (2) a device (e.g. a conveyor belt), for introducing the feed material to be separated, (3) a device for introducing heavy liquid, (4) a mechanism provided at the opposite end of the tank for removing light weight particles from the other end of the tank, and (5) a mechanism for removing heavy material from the base of the tank. The last comprises two elevator wheels facing each other and inclined at an angle (esp 45 degrees) to the vertical; forming a right section V between them, the gap between the closest parts of the wheels being less than the width of the wheels themselves. The appts is used e.g. for separating schist contg. U of density 2.2-2-3 from limestone of density 2-5-2.60 using a pulp of magnetics in water at 1757g/l which gives a density of 2.40, as suspending medium.
