The grinders is for mounting on a machine tool, particularly a lathe, having a frame secured to the main machine and a tool carrier rotating on an axis fixed in relation to the frame, being particularly for machining heavy workpieces, which do not thus have to be removed from the main machine. It has a central fixed steady (3) with a cylindrical external surface coaxial to the axis of rotation (47), and a tool-carrying sleeve (4) with a cylindrical internal surface by which it rotates on the central steady. Means are provided for driving the sleeve, and for preventing its axial movement, and chambers are formed in the external steady surface between it and the sleeve, supplied via passages with fluid under pressure.
