O-phenylene diamine from O-nitroaniline in high yield - by catalytic redn in the presence of certain solvents and alkalis

o-Nitro aniline is catalytically reduced to o-phenylene diamine in a solvent having a dielectric constant of 2-3 in the presence of an alkali having a pH of 8-10 in aq. soln. o-Phenylene diamine is an intermediate for drugs dyes and other chemicals and the process gives good yields of high quality product. Suitable alkalis include Na2HPO4, borax, disodium, diborate, sodium acetate and sodium formate and suitable solvents include toluene, xylene, ethyl benzene or cumene.
