Decentralised cheque handling machine - reads magnetic ink codes and adds data fed in locally under central computer control

A decentralised handling system for documents, is especially for dealing with cheques at the point of submission. A reader is associated with a feed-in unit which can read data in magnetic ink, on the document and which is connected to a processor, and with a feed-in unit for the person handing in the document which is also connected to the processor; the processor is in two-way communication with a centralised data processor, and has a recording unit which records on the document after passage through the reader any data fed in through the input unit endorsed by the data processor; After leaving the recorder the document reaches a sorting unit which operates under the control of the data processor. The feed-in unit may be a keyboard, and the recorder may endorse the back of a cheque with fluorescent ink.
