The horizontal rigid support surface (1) is transparent or translucent, to allow it to be illuminated from beneath. Coloured sheets (3, 4, 5 etc.), possibly of flexible plastics material, and cut in various shapes, are placed edge to edge to define specific zones, the sheets being in a range of colours, so that the colours can be associated with specific types of terrain. Three dimensional model elements (20, 21) such as representing trees and buildings, may be positioned where required on the upper surface of the sheets (3, 4, 5 ...) and secured to the latter by gluing etc, with the sheets themselves preferably being self-adhesive. The system provides easy model assembly and facilitates changes without disturbing the finished model assembly.
