Hydrophilic, synthetic or mixed hydrophilic/synthetic textile materials are transfer printed or optically brightened using a transfer sheet carrying inks or brighteners contg. transferable dyes or optical brighteners, solvents and binders and (a) =1 cpd. which splits off water during the transfer heating stage and is converted into a cpd. with a vapour pressure (v.p.) of 10-5 Torr at 100-250 degrees C or (b) =1 of each of two cpds., one of which splits off water during the transfer heating stage and the other has a v.p. of 10-5 Torr at 100-250 degrees C, or (c) =1 cpd. with a v.p. of 10-5 Torr at 100-250 degrees C, in which case the printing substrate is dampened with water before printing. Good transfer prints onto hydrophilic substrates such as cotton and wool, without pretreatment of the fabric, are obtd.
