The modular elements (13), which are cylindrical, are juxtaposed and are threaded by at least two threads made of metal or plastic which run in conduits in the elements. The supports (1) of the umbrella comprise an annular part (9) and an upright brace (10), which support the waterproof cover. At lower extremity of the rod (2) there is a device (18) for spreading the umbrella which also forms a handle. The device consists of a case and a peg (20) which can rotate and has a knob (21) to operate it. The peg (20) can be immobilised by another peg which engages in a radial hole in the peg (20). The ends of the threads are attached to the peg such that rotation of it tensions or slackens them to errect or collapse the frame.
