One piece is equipped with a trapezoidal section tenon (2)and the second piece a mating mortise (3), such that, when joined the two present a rectangular section. The end face of one panel is fixed to the back of the tenon, and either the side or the end face of the second panel is fixed to the back of the mortise, depending whether the assembly is required to be orthogonal or coplanar. The sides of the mortise have countersunk trapped holes which receive screws to lock the tenons in position and fixing screws pass through holes (5) in the tenon and holes (6) in the mortise.
