Faults in the charging circuit of motor vehicles or boats are often lengthy and dirty tasks. A test set enables faults to be located very rapidly without removal of parts from the vehicle. Slipping driving belts are also detected. A protable test set of small dimensions has standard electrical connectors permitting its connexion to the vehicle generator and battery. A multirange voltmeter (V) and a centre zero ammeter (A) permit measurements of battery voltage and charging current. A potentiometer enables the excitation current to be adjusted manually. A series connected diode prevents the battery from discharging into the generator and a push button reversing switch associated with the diode enables a dynamo to be remagnetised with the correct polarity voltage.
