1376669 Lubricant coated metal sheets AMCHEM PRODUCTS Inc 12 June 1972 [14 June 1971] 27319/72 Heading B2E [Also in Division C5] A protective lubricant film is provided on the surface of a metal susceptible to acid etching by contacting the surface with a composition comprising a lubricating fatty acid and/or fatty oil and/or wax and/or mineral oil dissolved or dispersed in an aqueous phase containing an acid capable of etching the metal surface, an oxidising agent, and fluoride ions, the pH being suitable for formation of a coating (e.g. 2-5), the composition may be applied by flow-coating, low-pressure spraying or immersing with a contact time of 15-300 secs., to give a coating of 50-750 mg/sq. ft. The surface of the metal, e.g. ferrous metal, zinc or galvanized ferrous metal, may first be cleaned by detergent or alkali followed by pickling and rinsing. Specified oxidising agents are H 2 O 2 , dichromate, perborate, bromate, permanganate, nitrite, nitrate and chlorate. The etching acid may be a mineral and, phosphoric acid, acetic, lactic or tartaric acid, fluoroboric, fluorotitanic or fluorosilicic acid, chloroacetic or trichloroacetic acid, polyacrylic acid or HF Many Examples are given in which hot-rolled and cold-rolled steel panels and rods are coated using various compositions and conditions. The coatings comprise both organic and inorganic components (see Specification 1,349,826). Preferred coatings are soluble in toluene to at least 50% and show a pattern of light strations on a dark grey background, indicating a high organic content. The coatings prevent metal-to-metal contact during subsequent working of the metal.
