1379211 Braids FILZTUCHVERWALTUNGS GmbH 1 Nov 1971 [30 Oct 1970] 50604/71 Heading D1K [Also in Divisions E2 and F2] A hinge-pin e.g. in a heavy-duty hinge fastener for endless belts comprises plastics fibres embedded in, and joined together by, a thermosetting plastics material. The pin assembly may comprise two braided layers 5, 6 (Fig. 1), the inner layer 5 being of braided monofilaments of nylon or polyester and the outer layer 6 of braided multi-filament strands of the same materials, the diameter of the filaments of the inner layer being 5 to 20 times that of the filaments of the outer strands. The centre of the assembly may be hollow or contain single or multi-strand steel wire. The braided assembly is roughened using a solvent, possibly treated with a wetting agent, e.g. a fluorine derivative, dried, and wound onto a drum 9 (Fig. 3) which is placed in a tank 8 containing a thermosetting plastics material and a solvent. The material may contain ptfe. The tank is evacuated and turned through 180‹ so that the drum is immersed. It is then pressurised using an anhydrous gas to 5 to 10 atm gauge, and this pressure is maintained for several hours. The assembly is unwound and passed out of the tank via a nozzle 12 to a heating duct at 50 to 100‹C, where the solvent is driven off and hardening commetices, and rewound onto a grooved drum. After hardening, further heat treatment at 150‹C for several hours improves the dimensional stability of the product.
