The apparatus has a probe 35 at each side which on contacting a plant initiates the injection of a quantity of water mixed with a quantity of the material into the soil. The spool of a distributor valve 4 is normally to the right in Fig. 4 (not shown) so that oil supplied under pressure by a gear pump 1 driven by the tractor power-take-off 39 occupies a chamber 44 of a water injector 3, and is bled off to the oil tank 5 via pipeline 62 and limit valve 61. The pistons 45, 46 are thus held to the right, water having being drawn from tank 6 into chamber 48 of the injector 3 by the prior movement of the pistons 45, 46 to the right. Piston 54 is similarly held to the right in its cylinder 53 so that a mixing chamber 11 (to which the water chamber 48 is connected) is held in a forward position with respect to the apparatus. When the probe 35 is moved by contact with a plant, levers 68, 70 move the spool of distributor valve 4 to the left in Fig. 4. Pressure fluid is now supplied to the right-hand side of the piston 45 and the water is expelled from the chamber 48 into a pipeline 10. Pressure fluid is also supplied via valve 73 and pipe 55 to the piston 45 to move it to the left and hence move the mixing chamber 11 rearwards, so that water and material may be injected into the soil at a single spot. The pipeline 10 moves by reaction upwards in the mixing chamber 11 against spring 21 thus opening the outlet 25 for water and material, and closing with flap 33 the material inlet 15a to the mixing chamber 11. Material is supplied to the inlet 15a from a hopper 12 by a guide 66 and a metering mechanism 65 driven by a chain 64 from the corresponding wheel 64. The volume of the mixing chamber 11 is adjustable by screwing of the portions 13 and 14. In a modification, Fig. 8 (no; shown), the portion 13 is surrounded by a casing (28) supplied with water under pressure from the pipeline 10, and openings are provided in the wall of the chamber 11 to allow water to pass into the chamber 11.
