A preferred composition is silica with up to 20% of one or more of fireclay, CaO, MgO, Al 2 O 3 , ZrSiO 4 or Cr 2 O 3 . The composition may be in the form of a porous sleeve 6 on a metal roll body 8 having tapered ends 10 filled with thermal insulation 16. The roll body 8 is formed with spaced projections 18 supporting the sleeve 6 and is welded to the shaft ends 10 and to drive rings 12. Each drive ring has circumferential projections 36 engaging locking slots 38 in the sleeve.
