The elements on a layer 1, which may be a textile, may have the form shown at 4a, 4b, 4c or 4d and may be of foamed plastics. The pad 2 is compressible and may have a further layer 5 to provide stability of shape and dimensions. Layer 5 may be of paper, a plastic, a woven or non-woven textile an elastic material or a rigid plastic or metal. A surface treatment of the pad 2 could replace the layer 5. The various layers can be united over their whole area by an adhesive, by welding, by a laser or may be joined at only spaced points for example at selvedges 8, 9, 10 Fig. 5, and the material may be cut at 10 to form strips.
