1402078 #-allyl nickel catalysed diene polymerization B D BABITSKY V N BERESNEV T G BOLSHAKOVA N A BUZINA V A VASILIEV N A KALINICHEVA V A KORMER M I LOBACH I I RADCHENKO and T D KHRUSTALEVA 15 June 1973 28494/73 Heading C3P Stereoregular 1,4-trans-polymers of 2-alkylbutadiene-1,3 or copolymers thereof with 1,3- butadiene are obtained by polymerizing the monomer(s) in an aqueous medium using a catalyst a pi-allyl nickel complex of formula where R 1 to R 5 are hydrogen, halide, alkyl or aryl, and X is a singly charged anion. The process may be carried out in the presence of an emulsifier, e.g. oxyethylated alkyl phenols, polyoxyethylene-sorbitan monopalmitate, and sulphonic acid salts. Co-catalysts which may also be present are saturated carboxylic acids, e.g. formic or adipic and salts thereof, e.g. nickel trifluoroacetate, and mineral acids, e.g. hydrochloric and carbonic, and salts thereof, e.g. potassium iodide, potassium thiocyanate and tin chloride. In the examples, the aqueous media polymerization of isoprene, 2-ethylbutadiene - 1,3, 2 - isopropylbutadiene - 1,3, 2 - decylbutadiene - 1,3/butadiene - 1,3 isoprene/butadiene - 1,3 and 2 - ethylbutadiene- 1,3/butadiene - 1,3 is described using #- pentenyl nickel iodide or chloride, crotyl- or allyl nickel iodide, 1 -phenyl-2-isopropyl-#-allyl nickel thiocyanate, and 1 - n - butyl - 2- bromo-allyl-nickel mercaptide, and, in most cases, various of the above emulsifiers and/or co-catalysts.
