METHOD FOR THE PRODUCTION OF OMEGA LACTAMS AND THEIR PRECURSORS BY FORMATION AND NITROSATION OF A CYCLOMETHYLENE KETENE-SO2 ADDUCT

1411061 Omega lactams and precursors therefor SNIA VISCOSA SOC NAZIONALE INDUSTRIA APPLICAZIONI VISCOSA SpA 25 Jan 1973 [27 Jan 1972] 3916/73 Heading C2C A novel adduct of a cyclomethylene ketene and sulphur dioxide is prepared by reacting these two compounds preferably in solution in, for example, CCI 4 , cyclohexane, n-hexane or liquid SO 2 , and removing any excess SO 2 . The ketene is suitably cyclopentamethylene ketene, and the adduct may have the formula wherein n= 1 to 4. The adduct may be nitrosated and the nitroso compound so obtained may be converted into an omega-lactam or a precursor thereof, e.g. by heating to a temperature of from 20‹ C. to 100‹ C. Examples relate to the production of caprolactam.
