1436331 Optical apparatus FERRANTI Ltd 28 Aug 1973 [30 Aug 1972] 40165/72 Heading J A training simulator for a submarine periscope comprises a viewing station 10 containing focusing and range-finding apparatus 12, 30-36, a hollow tube 15. 18 extending from the station, the lower part 18 extending into a hollow support tube 19 and rotatable on bearings 20, and a television monitor 24 in the periscope tube providing a scene on which the focusing and range-finding apparatus may be used. 'The periscope tube also has bearings at 16 in a ceiling bulkhead 14 and at 21 to prevent lateral movement, carries a friction member 22 co-operating with a support friction member 23 to simulate rotational inertia, and has a slip ring 26 for connections to a power cable 27 for the monitor and other controls. The range finder comprises a beam-splitter 30 and mirror 31 along the axis of eye-piece 12, mirror 31 being rotatable by cam 36 and lever 34 against spring 33, a shutter 38 being rotated open on operation of the cam. In order to facilitate focusing of both images in the rangefinder, a block of refractive material 39 is introduced into the longer light path via the rotatable mirror. Rotation of the periscope tube by control handles produces a lateral shift of the image in the monitor while one handle controls vertical shift of the image corresponding to tilting of the sighting head on a periscope.
