1281710 Mixing apparatus H NIELANDER 8 Dec 1969 [10 Dec 1968] 59791/69 Heading B1C Mixing machine for plasticating rubber and plastics has a cylinder 8 and a piston 32 which is rotated and reciprocated relatively to the cylinder. The piston has bores 33 through which the material is extruded as the piston reciprocates, the bores may be of various configurations (Fig. 14, not shown), and the piston may also have slots or projections. The cylinder may be clamped between end-plates 5, 6, and reciprocated along stationary rods 4 by a hydraulic, pneumatic or screw jack connected to a rod 19, or alternatively the cylinder may be fixed and the piston reciprocated. In this case, the drive motor may also be reciprocated along guides with the piston rod (Fig. 20, not shown) or the drive motor may be fixed and the piston rod rotated through a splined connection which allows relative axial movement (Fig. 25, not shown). The cylinder may be located between the end plates 5, 6 by tie rods passing through axial bores in the cylinder (Fig. 17, not shown). The cylinder may be charged and emptied by removing end caps 35, 36 which are held in place by the end plates. Alternatively, the cylinder may be flanged and protrude through an opening in one end plate (Figs. 22, 23, not shown) so that one end cap may be removed without disturbing the end plates. The cylinder may also have a side wall a supply tube containing a feeding ram or screw (Fig. 24, not shown) to enable material to be added while mixing continues. The cylinder has cooling or heating passages 38 (Figs. 5-10, not shown). The piston 32 and piston rod 10 may also be hollow to allow heating or cooling fluids to be passed through, the bores 33 may then be formed by tubes passing through the hollow interior of the piston (Fig. 4, not shown). Alternatively the cylinder and piston may be electrically heated. The cylinder may be steel, plated, or lined with ceramic material or made of stainless steel. The piston may also be coated with ceramics, and its periphery may be coated with a lowfriction material such as a fluorinated hydrocarbon polymer, or bronze.
