ABSTRACTA method for separating blood which utilizes sus-pendable contact-activating particles to initiate bloodclotting generally throughout the volume of blood isdisclosed herein. The contact-activating particles aredeposited in a vessel and when whole blood is applied tothe vessel, the particles are suspended throughout thevolume of the blood and remain so suspended, withoutmechanical agitation, during at least the initial stagesof coagulation. The particles are precipitated from theserum portion of the blood during a subsequent centri-fugal separation. Also, a procedure for making appro-priately sized contact-activating particles used in themethod of the present invention is disclosed.
