1505912 Oxyhydrochlorination B F GOODRICH CO 23 May 1975 [22 July 1974] 22531/75 Heading C2C Chlorinated derivatives of ethylene are produced by oxyhydrochlorination of ethylene or a chlorinated ethylene derivative; separating in a stream from the process any unwanted chlorinated ethylene derivatives and other byproducts; injecting the stream into a fixed or fluidized bed of an alumina combustion catalyst having a surface area of at least 10 sq.m./g which is non-friable and resistant to attrition which may be fluidized by O 2 -containing gas containing at least 2 moles of O 2 per mole of C and maintained at 400-500‹ C. to produce a mixture of hot combustion gases comprising HCl and being substantially free of Cl 2 and chlorohydrocarbon materials; recycling the mixture of gases to the oxyhydrochlorination step; and at least a portion of the raw materials fed to the process is employed to remove heat from the fluidized bed of the combustion catalyst. The pressure is preferably kept at 25-150 p.s.i.g. with a contact time of 10-50 seconds. The process is particularly suitable in the production of vinyl chloride including the steps of (1) direct chlorination of ethylene at low temperature in the liquid phase to form ethylene dichloride, (2) cracking of ethylene dichloride under pressure in vapour phase at 450-650‹ C. to form vinyl chloride and byproduct HCl and (3) oxyhydrochlorination using the HCl from step (2) combined with the mixture of hot combustion gases mixed with ethylene and O 2 to produce additional ethylene dichloride which is recycled to step (2).
