1292908 Making metal oxide, nitride or carbide articles UNION CARBIDE CORP 17 Feb 1970 [17 Feb 1969] 7558/70 Heading C1A [Also in Divisions C7 and D1] A "relic" process, see Specifications 1,144,033, 1,159,210 and 1,177,782, in which organic polymeric fibres, textiles or shaped articles impregnated with metal (including Si) compounds are converted by heating under appropriate conditions into articles having the form of the organic precursor but composed of metal oxides, carbides or nitrides, includes the steps of carbonizing the impregnated precursor then contacting it at above 740‹ C. with CO 2 to remove all or part of the carbon from it by oxidation. In examples rayon yarn is impregnated with an aqueous ZrOCl 2 -YCl 3 solution and rayon tape with a Th(NO 3 ) 4 -CeCl 3 solution. Each is then treated with ammonia to convert the metal compounds to their hydroxides, carbonized in a stream of nitrogen, oxidized in a stream of CO 2 , and in the second case heated for a further period in air, to form a metal oxide yarn or tape. Other specified metals are W, Be, Al, Ta, Nb, Mg, Ca, Sr, Hf, La and the other rare earths.
