The automatic loader supplies a machine tool with items to be machined from an access ramp. It has means for identifying the items and indexing them forward, together with others positioning them the right way up and at the correct angle. Each item is monitored for correct positioning, and the machine tool is supplied by means of two loading arms, each having a carrier at the free end. The arms are driven by cams, moving to and from between the extended and retracted positions. The items can be secured elastically by their periphery on the carriers, a portion of each fitting over a finger on the carrier which ensures the correct angular position.
