A large scale thermal storage system particularly for the excess heat produced by nuclear plant, for retaining the heat during summer and using it during winter, employs a large natural or man -made depression, with a hot water entry, and which is devices into long narrow zones by portions. The portions are interconnected in parallel and/or series at the ends of the zones, and filled with gravel or stones as well as water. A cold water discharge is included following a circuit in which the warm water is used. The zones may be divided into shorter lengths by porous dividers, and the whole is covered by a cement or asphalt layer and a thermal insulation layer. The porous structure is severl to several dozen metres thick.
