A thyristor (X1a) or similar semiconductor is connected in series with a load circuit. The thyristor is switched on by application of a voltage of the correct polarity and with an operating signal applied to the trigger. The thyristor is subsequently switched off by reducing the current below the maintaining value. The switching pulse has a time duration longer than the switch off time of the thyristor. A conducting path (B1a) separated from the load presents an impedance which allows the rate of voltage rise between anode and cathode of the thyristor to approach but not exceed the device maximum.
