1508167 Making glass compositions OWENSCORNING FIBERGLAS CORP 13 Nov 1975 [25 Nov 1974] 46912/75 Heading C1M In preparing a glass melt containing volatile and/or corrosive ingredients, the batch formulation is divided into a base glass portion (e.g. of eutectic composition) which is melted and flowed as a stream, and an additive portion (e.g. containing boron and/or fluorine compounds) which is melted separately and introduced into the base glass stream with homogenization (e.g. stirring), with a residence time of the additive portion in the molten state less than that for the base glass portion. The additive portion is preferably introduced near the stirrer and the homogenized melt may be partially recycled. Examples refer to making fibre compositions containing boron or fluorine compounds.
