Heading C2C. dl-Trans-chrysanthemic acid is resolved by reacting with D(-)- or L( + )-threo-1-p-nitro. phenyl - 2 - dimethylamino - propane - 1,3 - diol and separating the resulting salts of d-trans- and l-trans-chrysanthemic acid by difference in solubility, followed if desired by conversion into the optically active acids. d-Transchrysanthemic acid may be obtained from dltrans-cis chrysanthemic acid by reacting with D(-) - threo - 1 - p - nitrophenyl - 2 - dimethylamino propane-1,3-diol and separating the dtrans salt by difference in solubility and if desired converting into the free acid. l-Transchrysanthemic acid may be obtained from a mixture of l-trans and dl-cis acids by reacting with L( +) - threo - 1 - p - nitrophenyl - 2 - dimethylamino - propane - 1,3 diol and separating the l-trans salt by difference in solubility and, if desired, converting into the free acid; the mother-liquors obtained after isolation of the l-trans salt may be evaporated and the residue hydrolysed to give the dl-cis acid. The salts of d-trans and l-trans chrysanthemic acid with D(-) - and L(+ ) - threo - 1 - p - nitrophenyl - 2- dimethylaminopropane - 1,3 - diol are claimed per se.
