1351886 Extrusion-blow moulding E P REMY ET CIE 2 Feb 1972 [12 Feb 1971] 4996/72 Heading B5A Sealed containers are formed by extruding a continuous length of tubing, e.g. of polyethylene, enclosing a mould around it while the interior of the tube is maintained in communication with a source of sterile gas under a constant pressure 0À04-0À06 atm. higher than atmospheric and is sealed at its bottom, blow-moulding by creating a vacuum around the exterior of the parison and then sealing the top of the container formed and the bottom of the following parison length, opening the mould and removing the container. As shown in Fig. 1, a parison T is extruded from die 10 of extruder 11, 12, the core 15 of which, and thereby the interior of parison T, is in permanent communication with pressurized gas source 17. The mould parts 19a, 19b have mould cavities 20a, 20b, passages 21a, 21b for the extrudate, and projections 22a, 22b to seal the mould cavity from the atmosphere when the parts 19a, 19b are closed. The cavity is connected to evacuation means 30 by pipes 27a, 27b and the mould parts are cooled by coolant pipes 36a, 36b, 37a, 37b. With the lower portion P 1 of the parison closed in the preceding cycle, the mould parts are closed on to it, sealing it at 22 and gripping the bottom portion thereof. After blow-moulding by gas from source 17 and vacuum through pipes 27, jaws 24a, 24b are closed by actuators 25a, 25b, sealing the article and cutting it by edge 26 on jaw 24b, this portion not being cooled. Shear member 32 is then actuated to remove the bottom waste. Switch 29 is operated to connect the mould with the atmosphere before the mould is opened and the article removed. A further length of tubing T is extruded and the cycle repeated.
