Built-up hardening road surface - has square components each with four congruent triangles at square corners

The surface is built up of loose components forming a pattern of squares assembled together. Each basic square component (2) is composed of four congruent triangles (3) at the corners of the square, the side of the square section (4) being equal to the hypotenuse of the triangle bearing against it. Where the acute angles of the triangle are chamfered off, the side of the square can be equal to the shortened hypotenuse. Chamfering can be done at 90 deg. to the hypotenuse. The triangular sections can be of two different thicknesses, those of the same thickness being diametrically opposite or adjacent to each other. The square section can be of different thickness to the triangular ones.
