The male pipe end is inserted in the cylindrical socket, whose internal diameter is greater than the external diameter of the male end, and whih has an internal annular groove accommodating a sealing ring with a lip extending in the transverse direction in the unloaded state. Measured in the lengthwise direction of the socket, the width of the groove (7) is smaller at the open side than at its base. The groove can be enclosed by two sidewalls (5, 6) one or both of which are inclined to a plane at right angles to the lengthwise axis of the pipe. The groove sidewall nearest the open end of the socket can be inclined outwards towards the open end and towards the outside of the pipe.
