In the permanent-magnetic material of the SmCo5 type of the following composition: where 0.27 x1 0.77 0.15 x2 0 .65 0.06 x3 0.56 0.02 x4 0.52 0 /= y /= 0.25 x1+x2+x3+x4=1 at least part of the samarium is replaced by a cerium mischmetal having an approximately constant composition and by further variable additions of the elements cerium, lanthanum, neodymium and praseodymium. This results in well-defined compositions and reproducible magnetic properties (cf. Figure 4). The powder-metallurgical preparation comprises fusing the starting alloy, grinding, aligning in a magnetic field, isostatic pressing, sintering, heat treatment, controlled cooldown and tempering.
