The process is carried out in the presence of a cation exchanger which is insoluble in water and has a calcium-binding capacity of at least 2 mEq/g and which is derived from a copolymer or graft copolymer of olefinically unsaturated monobasic and/or polybasic carboxylic acids, and in the presence of 0.05 to 2 g/l of complexing agents which are soluble in water and bind calcium ions and which are from the class of pyro-, tri-, poly- and metaphosphates, or of organic complexing agents which are soluble in water and bind calcium ions. In the apparatus used for this purpose, the solution from the washer is continuously or intermittently passed by means of a loop line which is equipped with a circulating pump through an adsorption apparatus which is suitable for separating the cation exchanger from the washing and cleaning liquid. The amount of cation exchanger is such that the residual hardness in the washing and cleaning solution is 0.5 to 20 mg of CaO/l. The preferred area of use is the washing of textiles (laundry) and tableware, in which case the results of cleaning are above average.
