Water-sol edible thermoplastic articles esp for food packaging - prepd. from compsns contg. starch and inorganic alkali salt of protein

Water-soluble and edible thermoplastic moulding batches consist of a starch material, (I) an inorganic alkali salt (II) of a protein material, pref. 10-40 wt. % water an edible organic low mol. wt. plasticiser and an edible lubricant. Wt ratio (I) : (II) is pref. 10:90 to 90:10. Films are uised for packaging food esp. in packs with divided compartments, for human consumption esp. precooked food, animal food and for encapsulating pharmaceuticals, also for fishing bait and food additives. Divided packs which can be consumed without opening can be prepd. Packs and separating films can be used in bakery industry and confectionery. Extrudates obtd. from compsns. contg. (I) and (II) have outstanding elasticity, resistance to blocking when wet, resist bleeding, are edible, strong at low moisture content, heat-insulating and water-resistant, permeable and also resist folding. Articles are hardly soluble in acid water and easily soluble in alkaline water, and are digested completely.
